St. Charles is a historical town located 40 miles west of Chicago. The first settlers to stake a claim in this area arrived in 1833, but they did not officially settle on the land until 1834. The town was officially incorporated in 1839 and has remained an active community since its inception.
Although St. Charles was considered a remote town because it was a 3 day trip away from Chicago by wagon, and although the Fox River running through the center of the town, larger boats could not navigate the waterway. It was not until the railroad came into the area in the 1880s that the area began to become more accessible and see significant growth.
Historical speculation states that many homes in St. Charles were participants in the Underground Railroad system. While this speculation cannot be officially proven since many people would not admit to participating in this activity, St. Charles was home to an extensive Anti-Slavery Group, and it is easy to believe that the Underground Railroad did operate in this remote area.

St. Charles is no longer considered a remote or isolated town. It is a prosperous town that is home to nearly 33,000 people. The area has grown and prospered well over the years and has even been voted as the Best Small Town to Live In in America by Family Circle magazine in 2011.
